Excerpt: Aquae

True to my word, I started today on the second draft of Aquae, my NaNoWriMo novel. I thought I’d share the first page, and I’d love to get some feedback on it. Does it draw you in as an opening? Perhaps most importantly, how old would you say the narrator is, judging from this scene? I’m a little concerned that I haven’t quite nailed the appropriate voice for his age, so I’m curious.

Thanks for taking a look! (Also, don’t forget that you can still enter to win an ebook copy of His Own Good Sword; check out this post.)

Hear ye, hear ye!

First, apologies for the radio silence lately! I’ve been devoting all my writing time over the past three weeks to NaNoWriMo, which leaves no time at all for blogging. I’m happy to say that I’m nearing 44,000 words on my NaNo manuscript, a Roman-Britain-set fairy-tale retelling, and I’m still very much in love with the story and characters (perhaps too much; I’ve started developing a book-crush on my villain). I’m hesitant to post excerpts until the month is done, since the manuscript is a glorious mess right now and I’d rather get it completely finished, even in a slapped-together sort of way, than worry about editing and polishing bits of it for public consumption. That’s what December’s for!

Second, I want to let you guys know that my publisher, Winter Goose, has put their entire catalogue on sale this holiday weekend, with reductions on both softcovers and ebooks. His Own Good Sword is now available in Nook and Kindle formats for only $2.99. The softcover edition has been reduced to $13.99 if you buy it directly from Winter Goose, which you can do here.

Finally, my fellow author Hazel West is also currently running a sale on her latest book On a Foreign Field, which is a great YA historical novel about William Wallace—told from an Englishman’s perspective! Check it out here.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
