Blurb for The Sword Unsheathed

I’ve been working sporadically on the blurb for The Sword Unsheathed over the past few days. Here’s what I’ve come up with; let me know what you think!

Challe Risto barely has the time to mourn her father’s death before she’s bound in marriage to the son of the man who killed him. Knowing she won’t see justice done, Challe decides to seek vengeance instead—but within the shining marble walls of Rien, nothing is as simple as she thought it would be. Challe soon finds herself caught in the current of Imperial politics, a whelming tide of alliance and intimation, duplicity and deceit—and underlying it all is the whispered rumor that the long-lost king of Cesin has returned to throw off the Empire’s shackles and reclaim his rightful throne.

As war clouds gather and the battle lines are drawn before Rien’s very gates, Challe receives an offer of help from an unexpected source. Misplacing her trust could be a fatal mistake, but refusing the offer most certainly means death. Her only choice is to accept—and on that choice, for better or worse, depends the outcome of the war.

Thanks, Hazel! I’ve been rather neglecting TSU in favor of Aquae, but I’m starting to devote some thought/time to it again. Going to try to work on them simultaneously-we’ll see how that goes. ;)

Well, if the characters aren’t talking to you, then they deserve to be ignored :P Good luck with working them together!

This sounds very intriguing! Honestly, there is only one sentence that bothers me a little. It’s this one: “Misplacing her trust could be a fatal mistake, but refusing the offer most certainly means death. Her only choice is to accept-”

To me, that means that she has no choice. It sounds as if you’re denying Challe any agency, and I was hoping she would get to be active in this book. If you see what I mean? Perhaps, if you said: If she chooses wrongly, she’ll certainly die -and, what’s more, the fate of the war may depend on her choice? Or something like that - I’m not phrasing it well.

Anyway, you’re doing good work, and I’m really looking forward to reading both these books.

I know exactly what you mean. I’ve actually kept tweaking that part of blurb, because I’m not really satisfied with it yet, either-it does make her sound quite passive, and I don’t think it reflects her actual role that well.

Thanks for commenting! I’ll keep working on it. ;)
